“When they were saying among themselves it couldn’t be done, it was done” I got this quote by Helen Keller from an issue of the Lions magazine. This saying got me thinking and has also challenged me.

For 39 long years, having a newsletter seemed so insignificant or impossible to realize. This Lion Year 2012-2013, however, through the concerted efforts of the new batch of officers, the newly recruited members, and the senior members who served as mentors and inspiration, we have finally come up with the maiden issue of “Sugarlandia Bulletin”

As president for this Lion year, it is my ardent desire to put our club in a much better direction, never to settle in mediocrity. Some consider us an old and small club, but we never have that feeling in our hearts. In our hearts, we are proud that we have withstood the test of time by sheer determination, commitment and sincerity to serve.
Bacolod City Sugarlandia is a club to reckon with. Chartered on May 14, 1973 by our founder, and grand master key awardee Lion Irving Villasor (+), it boasts of 20 respectable, dignified members, the likes of PDG Lion Romeo Deocadin (+), PDG Ben Yapjoco, PP Leonito Lopue, PP Roger Las Piñas and many more.

The legacy that our club has left behind are it’s big projects such as the belfry and the waiting shed of the cathedral, the electronic clock at the cathedral’s tower, the skating rink at capitol lagoon, and a lot more.

This Lion year, we started with a fundraising activity followed by our induction at L’Fisher hotel, launched the book mobile which is aimed to address illiteracy, sponsored the LOPPTA table tennis tournament, joined the Operation Smile project of the HOPE Foundation, and the Bacolaodiat festival (thanks to Lion Leonito Lopue, MJF, the chairman of the three mentioned activities), conducted a series of medical mission, reaching as far as Hinobaan, Himamaylan, Moises Padilla, Hinigaran, Murcia and other neighboring towns and cities not counting those missions held in Bacolod City.

As Lions, we embrace our motto “We Serve”. We could not resist just to watch people especially the children go hungry due to poverty. Our commitment as Lions must go beyond and must be translated into action.  That’s why aside from feeding and giving donations, we go out of our way to conduct livelihood projects to provide people their own means of living.

I am so thankful to my very supportive members, who even in their busy schedules have tried their best to join in our activities, donated funds, initiated projects and most especially recruited quality members to our club.

I wish to thank our District Governor Lion Faustino A. Yuson III MJF, who not only is a fellow Ilonggo, but a governor who is always ready and very accommodating to help and guide me accordingly in the performance of my duty as president. My thanks also to 1st VDG Lion Araceli Regalado MJF, 2nd VDG Lion Rolando Layson MJF, Council Chairman Lion Bert Layda, all Cabinet and Council Officers and Members, and our past District Governors and Guiding Lions who in one way or another have contributed to the kind of Lion that I am today.

Kudos to our club in reaching its Ruby Anniversary. I’m confident that the next batch of officers will do their best to continue what this Lion Year Officers have accomplished, perhaps even more and better. Please be proud in raising up the banner of Bacolod City Sugarlandia Lions, because by doing so, you not only lift up the spirit of service but the legacy that our charter members have left behind. Let us continue to strive to make a difference in the lives of our less fortunate brothers in society. We have done that many times and we will continue to do so.“
